Day drives from Nagoya: coast and mountain routes across Tokai
Tokai seasonal drives: where to go in spring, summer and autumn
Cherry blossom in Mikawa, summer flowers in Mie, autumn leaves at Korankei and along the Seseragi Kaidō. A season-by-season guide to driving in Tokai, with links to the official pages for peak times.
Tokai seasonal drives change character through the year. Spring brings cherry blossom to Mikawa, summer fills Mie’s temple gardens and farms with flowers, and autumn turns the hills of Okumikawa and Gifu red and gold. This guide sorts the region’s destinations by season. Peak times shift from year to year, so check the official announcements before you set off.
How to plan Tokai seasonal drives
Start with the view, not the map. Decide what you want to see, whether that’s blossom, flowers or autumn leaves, and the direction usually follows: Mikawa for cherry trees, Mie for summer flowers, the mountains of Okumikawa and Gifu for autumn colour.
The official pages are honest about timing. Prefectural and city tourism sites list peak times as typical-year guides and suggest checking with each municipality or site for details. Weather moves the season forward or back. A quick look at the official page before you leave is the simplest habit a seasonal driver can have.
Spring: linking Mikawa’s cherry blossom
Aichi Prefecture’s official tourism site, Aichi Now, gathers the cherry-blossom spots of western and eastern Mikawa in its spring blossom feature. A companion feature covers Nagoya, Owari and Chita.
Okazaki Castle Park and the Oto and Iga rivers
Okazaki Castle Park is one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Around 800 Somei-Yoshino trees line the Oto and Iga rivers, so castle, water and blossom sit together in a single view.
The Okazaki Sakura Festival includes an evening light-up. Dates and lighting hours are announced each year and can change with the bloom.
Kariya, Hekinan and Toyota
Kijō Park in Kariya has about 400 cherry trees. Akashi Park in Hekinan has around 250 Somei-Yoshino. Suigen Park in Toyota sits along the Yahagi River and is known for its tunnel of cherry trees.
Each town has its own festival and its own mood. Rather than chase all of them in one day, choose two or three and leave time to walk under the branches. Western Mikawa rewards an unhurried pace.
Katakuri flowers in Asuke
Toyota City’s Korankei page also lists a spring event: the katakuri flowers at Korankei, from late March to early April. It’s a quiet reason to see a famous autumn spot in another season. The Asuke Tourism Association has the details.
Summer: Mie’s flower gardens
The Mie Prefecture Tourism Federation keeps a flower calendar with a summer tab covering water lilies, sunflowers, lotus, lavender, hydrangeas and Japanese irises. It notes that the information is a guide as of each update, and asks visitors to contact each site directly for accurate details.
Hydrangeas and lotus
Hydrangea spots on the calendar include Kazahaya no Sato, Daiji-ji, Man’yō no Sato Park, Daishi no Sato, Bell Farm and Red Hill Heather no Mori. For lotus, it lists the lotus festival at Takada Honzan, Futami Shōbu Roman no Mori and the Ōga lotus in the moat beside Tamaki Town Hall.
Temple grounds and gardens reward a slower pace. Stay a little longer in one place, then take the scenic way to the next.
Sunflowers and lavender
Sunflowers appear in fields seen from JR Seki Station, at the Shima City tourist farm, Mihata-shinden, Ōdai-chō Yakii and Aspia Tamaki Agri. Lavender is listed at Menard Aoyama Resort.
Some summer flowers have a short window. Check the summer tab for the latest status before you go.
Autumn: following the leaves
Autumn is the heart of the Tokai driving year. According to Gifu Prefecture’s official tourism site, autumn leaves in Gifu can be enjoyed over a long period, from late September to late November. That leaves room to return more than once, to different places.
Korankei, Tokai’s leading autumn-leaf spot
Toyota City calls Korankei the leading autumn-leaf spot in the Tokai region. About 3,000 maples turn red and yellow, and the Korankei Momiji Matsuri runs for about a month from 1 November.
The leaves are lit up at their peak. For the light-up period, the city points visitors to the Asuke Tourism Association. Events take place mainly on weekends, and the city notes that the area gets crowded.
To continue from Korankei into the mountains, see An Okumikawa mountain drive: from Korankei to the Chausuyama Highlands.
Hida-Mino Seseragi Kaidō
Gifu’s tourism site describes the Hida-Mino Seseragi Kaidō as a well-known autumn-leaf drive, 64 km long, running from Gujō City to Takayama City. The road is lined with broadleaf trees. Because of the change in elevation, the colour arrives in order, starting at Nishiure Pass, the highest point at 1,113 m, so the season lasts a long time. It is one of the 33 selected autumn-leaf spots of Hida and Mino.
The listed access is from Gujō Hachiman IC via National Route 472, or from Takayama-nishi IC via Prefectural Route 73. Komorebi Hiroba, along the way, is described as a place to rest during a drive.
Gujō and beyond
The same site’s autumn feature lists more spots. Gujō Hachiman Castle holds its Momiji Matsuri when the leaves around the castle peak, with taiko drumming and matchlock-gun demonstrations on weekends. Hirugano Kōgen is a highland area at about 900 m in Gujō City. At Ōyada Shrine’s Momiji-dani, about 3,000 wild mountain maples fill the valley.
The site gives peak times as typical-year information and suggests checking with each municipality for details.
Mie’s autumn colours
For colour of a different kind, the Mie flower calendar’s autumn tab lists cosmos at Nabana no Sato, Kazahaya no Sato and Seki-chō in Kameyama, dahlias at Nabana no Sato and KIMOTO Dahlia Garden, and autumn roses. The kochia at the Shima City tourist farm is green in October and turns red from around November.
Choosing a car for the season
On days spent near cherry avenues and flower fields, a car that brings the air and scent closer feels right. The Mazda Roadster is light on its feet, and with the roof down the landscape seems to open around you.
For longer days chasing autumn colour, comfort matters more. The clean lines of the Audi TT Coupé and the composed, unhurried feel of the Porsche Macan suit a long mountain road. You can see the cars TŌNORI features in the line-up.
