Day drives from Nagoya: coast and mountain routes across Tokai
Day drives from Nagoya: to the coast, into the mountains, along the roads of Tokai
A guide to day drives from Nagoya, organised by direction rather than by attraction: Chita, Atsumi, Lake Hamana, Ise-Shima, Gifu and Okumikawa, with thoughts on the kind of car that suits each road.
Choosing day drives from Nagoya by direction
Most lists of day drives from Nagoya are collections of sights. This guide takes a different approach. It groups the region into six directions and looks at what each road feels like: the views, the pace, and the kind of car that makes the drive a pleasure.
Some days call for the sea. Others call for green hills and a quiet, winding road. Match the direction to your mood, then match the car to the road, and a simple day out becomes something you remember.
How to use this guide
We have divided the area around Nagoya into six directions:
- Chita: easy coastal driving
- Atsumi: heading out towards the Pacific
- Lake Hamana: a loop by the water
- Ise-Shima: a coast a little further away
- Gifu: roads through the green
- Okumikawa: deep forest and winding roads
Each gets a short introduction here. Detailed guides for each direction will follow, and links to them will appear on this page as they are published.
If you would rather choose by season, our guide to Tokai seasonal drives is a good companion to this one.
Coast or mountains: how the drives differ
The same day out can feel very different depending on whether you point the car at the sea or the hills.
Coastal roads are about space. The sky opens up, the horizon stretches out, and simply driving starts to feel restful. Lower the window a little and you can smell the sea.
Mountain roads are about curves and colour. You pass through trees, the scenery changes bend by bend, and your attention settles on the drive itself. On these roads, the journey is the point.
Cars for coastal drives
Open roads with wide views suit cars that let you enjoy the openness.
The Mazda Roadster is light, simple and cheerful. Driven with the roof down, it puts the sky and the sea all around you. Its easy-going character fits an unhurried coastal afternoon well.
The Audi TT Coupé is all clean lines and quiet confidence. Its neat, rounded shape looks right against a bright seaside backdrop.
Cars for mountain drives
On roads with one curve after another, you want a car that feels easy to handle and lets you drive with a calm mind.
The Porsche Macan brings together the roominess of an SUV with the sense of fun you would expect from a sports car brand. Its strong, tidy design sits naturally among forested hills. It suits a day when you want to take the mountain roads at your own relaxed pace.
The six directions
Chita: easy coastal driving
The Chita Peninsula is the most approachable coastal escape from Nagoya, a place for gentle, unhurried driving by the sea.
Aichi Now, the official tourism site for Aichi Prefecture, publishes a model course called Koisuru Chita Hanto Drive. It starts at Chubu Centrair International Airport and visits Koi-no-Mizu Shrine, Noma Lighthouse, Cape Hazu and the Hana Hiroba flower farm, in that order, with an estimated total of about four hours. The site recommends it for couples, so it is worth a look if you are planning an anniversary drive.
For an evening version, see our Chita Peninsula sunset drive.
The car to match? The Mazda Roadster, with the sea breeze for company.
Atsumi: heading out towards the Pacific
The Atsumi Peninsula is about open sea views and long, relaxed stretches of road. It rewards drivers who like to look up and take in the scenery.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA suits it well. Its flowing, coupé-like silhouette looks at home in a wide, open landscape.
Lake Hamana: a loop by the water
Lake Hamana is a direction for waterside views and gentle driving, with the lake keeping you company as you go.
The elegant coupé lines of the Mercedes-Benz CLS fit the calm of a lakeside road. Choose it for a day when you want to slow down and let the scenery set the pace.
Ise-Shima: a coast a little further away
Ise-Shima is the coast you travel a little further for. It is a direction to save for a full day, when you want the sea to feel like a proper destination.
For a longer drive, a Lexus feels right. It is a brand built around refinement and composure, which suits a day spent heading towards a faraway coast.
Gifu: roads through the green
Gifu is a direction for mountain valleys and riverside scenery. The roads wind through greenery that looks different with each season.
The Porsche Macan’s relaxed presence fits these valley roads nicely. It suits a day when you want to take your time and watch the landscape go by.
Okumikawa: deep forest and winding roads
Okumikawa is where the road itself is the attraction. Deep green forest and a steady rhythm of curves make for a satisfying, unhurried drive.
The Mazda Roadster belongs here too. Taking each bend with care, the smell of the trees through the window, is exactly the kind of driving it is made for. Our Okumikawa mountain drive covers the route in more detail.
Making a day drive more comfortable
- Leave a little early. Spare time makes detours easy and stress-free.
- Stop often. A pause at a good viewpoint is part of the pleasure.
- Decide roughly when you want to head home, so the return leg feels just as relaxed.
- Check the weather and road information before you set off.
